Interventional

Precision tubes, wires, components and assemblies for medicine and science.

Tullamed’s Role

We manufacture precision tubes, wires and components for use in cardiovascular medicine, including for catheter manufacture and R & D purposes. We make mandrels and other tooling for catheter manufacture, and auxiliary tooling and stainless steel micro-welded assemblies related to stents, angioplasty balloons, guide wires and associated products.

Product is manufactured from stainless steels, nitinol and titanium.

These are critical elements in the design and manufacture of devices used in minimally invasive procedures, such as catheters, guidewires, stents, and other tools employed in fields like cardiology, neurology, and radiology.

Applications

Precision tubes, often referred to as hypotubes, are made from stainless steel, nitinol, or titanium. They’re engineered for high strength, flexibility, and biocompatibility, with tight tolerances—where required down to microns—to ensure consistent performance in navigating complex vascular pathways.

These tubes can be laser-cut to enhance flexibility and torqueability, critical for applications like stent delivery systems or aspiration catheters.

Wires, such as guidewires. core wires, pull-wires and mandrels are equally vital. They’re crafted from stainless steel, nitinol (valued for its shape memory and super-elasticity), or other alloys like MP35N. Precision grinding and coating processes (e.g., PTFE or hydrophilic coatings) optimize their surface finish and reduce friction, enabling smooth insertion and precise control during procedures.

Components and assemblies tie these elements together. This includes mandrels, coils, marker bands (made from platinum or gold and their alloys for radiopacity), and pull wire assemblies for steerable catheters. Tullamed specializes in producing these with processes like centerless grinding, laser welding, and micro-coiling, ensuring repeatability and scalability from prototype to production. Automation and machine learning are increasingly refining assembly precision—think sub-0.05mm accuracy for wire insertion, as seen in some robotic applications.

Interventional medical devices demand these parts to balance flexibility, strength, and minimal invasiveness while meeting strict regulatory standards (e.g., ISO 13485). The trend is toward multifunctional components—wires that pace and measure pressure, or tubes with integrated radiopaque markers—reducing the need for multiple tools during a procedure.
